Alligator hunt sees record-breaker

During this weekend's alligator hunting season, the old weigh-in record was shattered by just over 54 pounds! The new weight to beat is now 690.5 pounds.

Wildlife officials say the first two days of the season have been very good with about 30 alligators taken. Officers say the weather conditions have been favorable but catching gators is a real challenge.

Alligator Program Coordinator Ricky Flynt of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks said, "Hunters had a great opportunity, good water conditions, no wind, the moon has been a little bright, which seems to affect alligator activity but obviously talking with all the hunters, interacting with them on the water, they are seeing gators, having ample opportunity. They are just finding out it is a little bit harder than they thought."

The first segment of the season ended Sunday morning. Hunting will resume Friday afternoon. The hours are from 12 p.m. until 6 a.m. next Friday and Saturday.
