HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Work began Wednesday night repairing I-55's pothole filled lanes from south Jackson to Byram.

According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, the emergency overlays will be done at night and on the weekends to minimize travel delays.

During the first phase of work Wednesday, the left lane of I-55 south from Savanna Street to Byram was closed at seven p.m.

Crews will work until 6:00 a.m. repairing failed areas.

Engineers said the project consists of repairing, milling and paving the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate from McDowell Road to south of Byram.

For the next six weeks motorists can expect detours around the work zone and should use alternate routes.

Expect lane closures Monday through Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and on weekends from 8:00 p.m. Friday to 6:00 a.m. Monday.

The $2.8 million project is scheduled to be completed by November 7th.
