Scruggs files motion to open sealed transcripts

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Former attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs has asked a federal judge to open sealed grand jury transcripts involving his judicial bribery conviction.

The former Mississippi lawyer was one of the wealthiest tort attorneys in the nation.

Scruggs' request says the grand jury long ago closed its investigation and former testimony from now disbarred Hinds County District Attorney Ed Peters, who received immunity, might clarify incorrect facts now in the public domain.

Scruggs claims lifting the seal would bring ‘disinfecting' benefits of sunlight to this case.

Several other lawyers were also convicted in the bribery scheme -- as was former Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter.
