Myrlie Evers speaks at Alcorn building dedication

Posted: Updated:

Myrlie Evers, a civil rights champion and wife of slain civil rights martyr Medgar Evers, was on hand for the dedication of the Medgar Evers Heritage Village on the campus of Alcorn State University.

A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday for the state-of-the-art student housing complex.

Evers attended Alcorn A&M College from 1949 to 1952 when she married Medgar Evers.

In her keynote address, Evers said she never imagined a village such as this would bear her late husband's name.

"For all of the almost 50 years that he has been gone, it has been a constant battle and struggle on my part to see that he is remembers and not lost somewhere in the back pages of history," said Evers.

Alcorn honored outstanding students, alumni and faculty and staff at its founder's day convocation.
