Governor Haley Barbour says their work has made the state a better place to live and now he is honoring the eleven with the Mississippi Medal of Service.
Among the recipients is Reuben Anderson, who become the first black Justice on the Mississippi Supreme Court.
Other recipients include Republican U. S. Senator Thad Cochran, Jackson businessman Jim Barksdale and blues legend B-B King.
Also honored were Mississippi House Speaker Billy McCoy, former Mississippi Court of Appeals Judge Mary Libby Payne, University of Southern Mississippi President Emeritus Dr. Aubrey Lucas, University of Mississippi Chancellor Emeritus Robert Khayat, former Mississippi Board of Education Chairwoman Lucimarian Roberts and Jackson businessman Cornelius Turner.
