Classes resume after grenade removed from school

SMITH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A bomb squad removed a grenade from a classroom at Mize Attendance Center on Thursday, and students were allowed to leave if their parents were there to pick them up.

The school was put on lockdown after an eight-year-old boy in the third grade brought what appeared to be a hand grenade to school for show-and-tell. The grenade was real, but disarmed.

Smith County Schools Assistant Superintendent Priscilla Magee says school officials do not believe the student who brought the grenade had any ill intent.

Magee said the student will be suspended until a hearing with the school board.

According to Magee, the teacher followed proper procedure and immediately notified the principal when she observed the potential threat. Law enforcement was then called to the scene.
