Celebrities compete in Boy Choir fundraiser

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

You only had a minute to win it, but that was plenty of time to raise money for the Mississippi Boy Choir. The non-profit organization did its own version of the popular NBC television game show in a first-ever fundraiser Thursday night. It was held at the Mississippi Children's Museum and I was honored to be one of the contestants.

Like finely tuned athletes, we took on challenges that would be the envy of any Olympian...ok, maybe not, but the competition was fierce, none-the-less. You try balancing dice on a popsicle stick without dropping all six for 3 seconds.

Of course, like any sporting event, sometimes there's a bad call by the official..in this case, Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin. Even the emcee, Sweet Potato Queen, Jill Conner Brown, was stunned by the judge's call!

Brown said, "I saw you flip all of the pencils in the cup. You won. I'm not supposed to say that."

Now, if you think it's easy flipping pencils into 7 cups under a minute, think again and don't ask me how I did it!

Yet another bad call by the official! But it was all in fun and for a good cause. The Mississippi Boy Choir is in its 17th year and there is an impressive legacy. The talent was undeniable in the performances between games.

Artistic Director Lelon Thompson said, "I know the success stories. We've got a couple of boys that have been on Broadway in The Lion King and they've attributed that success to their beginnings here."

In the end, after a so-called "tiebreaker", "Judge" McMillin finally declared me and my partner, Meteorologist Lindsey Slater, the winners of the first Minit 2 Winit fundraiser for the Mississippi Boy Choir.

The money raised from the event will go to scholarships for talented boys who can't afford to be in the choir after auditions. It costs about a hundred dollars a month to be in the Mississippi Boy Choir.
