JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Rose Embly McCoy, a long time Mississippi educator and civil rights activist, has died. Family members say Mrs. McCoy, who was living in Hampton, Virginia, with her daughter, died earlier this week from declining health.

She founded the Educational Psychology Department at Jackson State University in the mid-1960s. It became the Department of Psychology in 1971 and she was the department chairwoman when she retired in 1980.

The Rose E. McCoy Auditorium is named after her.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mrs. McCoy was 97 years old.
