CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

October 1st 1961, the 114th Military Police Company was established. They were first deployed to Fort Gordon, Georgia.

The company commander, Captain Robert Ellington, says their mission changed and the unit was sent to Germany.

"Our mission was to get the tenets out of West Berlin. It of course was right in the middle of Russian territory. They finally gave up after we air dropped in there and we came home," said Captain Ellington (Ret.), former 114th MP Company Commander.

In 1961, the National Guard and Reservists supported the regular military. First Sergeant Marion Gaston recalls when the unit was first activated and its mission.

"We suddenly were activated and went to Fort Gordon. We had a great group of guys then and we did everything they asked us to do and I think a little more. So it was a real good experience...I wouldn't want to do it again, but it was all right," First Sgt. Gaston (Ret.) of the 114th MP Company added.

Sergeant Gaston says the National Guard's mission has changed dramatically in the past 50 years.

"People now in the reserves, national guard and army reserve may be they'll have three or four deployments and they don't just send them where we went to Fort Gordon, Georgia. They send them to Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan and lots of ugly places. So it is really different," Sgt. Gaston added.

These soldiers say there have been a lot of changes over the past 50 years in the role of the national guard plays. Then it was more of a support situation but now the national guard units are being deployed overseas into the hostile areas.
