JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Firefighters battled an apartment fire in Jackson Monday afternoon. Flames were seen shooting as high as one hundred feet in the air. It was also putting up a plume of gray smoke.

The fire department was able to respond quickly, and got two water towers set up on either side the fire. They quickly brought it under control before it could spread.

"All of a sudden you see a huge ball of fire just shooting directly out of the center of the roof" said apartment complex resident Samuel Hardee. "And you heard windows popping. The place was engulfed, I'm talking within minutes. I mean it took no time for that to happen. Fortunately the building from what everybody knows and I know has been empty for a while, there was nobody in the building as far as we know, nobody was injured thank goodness."

"We did have several apartments that was on fire" said Jackson Fire Department Deputy Chief R. D. Simpson. "Had already vented through the roof, we have no injuries, there were no injuries. We were able to confine it to the location."
