A Gulf Coast woman brutally murdered Monday, along with her disabled son, is a Vicksburg native.

Gulfport Police said 45 year old Karen Denise Ferguson and her 21 year old son Cole were fatally shot in their Orange Grove home.

According to investigators, 70 year old Paul Buckman shot Ferguson and her wheel chair bound son.

Officials said Buckman then died from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Classmate Cherry Dabney-Robbins of Vicksburg said Ferguson was a 1985 Warren Central High School graduate.

Dabney-Robbins describes her as a devoted mother, wife and faithful Christian.

She was married to Pastor Les Ferguson, the minister of Orange Grove Church of Christ in Gulfport.

Her five year old son was inside the home when Buckman entered and escaped to alert neighbors.

"All she thought about you know while the attack was taking place was saving her baby and staying there to protect Cole, and she did and she's just an amazing person," said Ferguson's brother-in-law Billy Ferguson.

Officials with the Vicksburg Church of Christ said Ferguson grew up in the congregation and was a member until she moved away.

Her parents currently live in Tennessee, and she has no immediate family still in Vicksburg.

She was the mother of four boys.
