Jackson high school student faces capital murder charges

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

16-year-old Zachary Smith should be playing football or planning for college. Instead, the Jackson high school student is in a jail cell, facing two charges of capital murder.

Jackson police say the night of September 25, Smith entered the home at 3881 Meadow Lane in South Jackson and shot two people to death: the homeowner, 32-year-old Terrance James, and a friend, 27-year-old Brandon Williams. Smith was 15 years old at the time.

James' wife was there as well, but she wasn't hurt. "She is the one who called 911 during that incident," says Jackson Police spokeswoman Colendula Green. "We were able to respond accordingly."

Police say Smith was also trying to rob the home.

3 On Your Side learned shortly after the murders that two separate weapons were used, but police aren't releasing any further information on that, and they're not elaborating on a motive. "Right now it's still under investigation," Officer Green says. "Once the investigation is complete, they will disseminate that information to you guys."

Smith has no prior arrests that Jackson Police know of at this time.
