Nine MS State Troopers appeal their suspensions

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Nine Mississippi State troopers are appealing their suspensions for getting copies of questions used to test candidates for promotion.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol Troopers admit receiving test questions, but feel their punishments are too severe. The troopers were suspended, some demoted, and none of them can apply for promotions for the next three years.

Dennis horn, their lawyer from Madison, says those involved did not violate any orders. He says troopers have collected questions from old tests for years to share as study guides. He also says the Highway Patrol saw it as standard practice.

A September 23rd letter from Colonel Donnell Berry, commander of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, says patrol officials learned in August about a "Potential breach of the new merit promotion testing system."
