Dangerous fugitive still at large in Pike County

PIKE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Manpower and air support is being reinforced Tuesday night as a manhunt continues for an armed and dangerous man in Pike County.

The fugitive is accused of rape and kidnapping and four counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

Kaunda Magee has eluded Louisiana lawmen for 13 days.

Around 3:30 Tuesday morning, Magee stole a green SUV just across the state line and made a run for it.

Deputies chased him into Mississippi just north of Tangipahoa Parish.

Throngs of heavily armed lawmen have set up a command center in front of a Pike County home where smith drove the SUV into a ditch and engaged in a shootout with deputies.

Magee managed to escape into the woods on foot.

Linny Ross says she thinks Magee came to her door.

"He just wanted to use the telephone and we would not let him in because somebody has called us already and told us there was a lot of shooting down there between us" Ross said.

Pike County Sheriff Mark Sheppard says the search will continue through the night, and more air support is being brought in.

Earlier this month, Smith shot and injured a police dog and then got away after leading police on a chase.

He broke into several homes in an attempt to evade lawmen.

Kaunda Magee is considered armed and dangerous.
