Problems at Robinhood Lake

Posted: Updated:
RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Rankin County private lake has been virtually drained because of damage its dam suffered during Tropical Storm Lee last September.

Robinhood Lakes is located south of Brandon. Residents think the county should finish the job it started in repairing the dam.

The county wants some help from the private developer to do the job.

In a story we did in September, the county had promised it would be repaired in six weeks. Six weeks have come and gone and now the matter is in litigation.

Tommy Thrash owns the lake and wouldn't return our call. But we did find some people who live around the lake like Ernie Payne, 63, who are not happy with what has happened to the level of the lake.

"It's ruined my life, I mean I ain't got nothing to look at no more. It's about all I do is sit around and look out at the lake," said Payne. "It's terrible, I've been on this lake since 1994, ever since Labor Day weekend when the levee crashed, you know it started raining, they really need to do something about it, I mean this is home. That's part of what makes this place home."

It is not only the people who live on the water who are upset, Tammy and Charles Swayze are not happy either.

"The county has made promises that they are gonna come out here and fix it. It has just kind of been a big question about what is going on around here," says Charles.

Because the matter is in litigation, we couldn't get anybody from Rankin County to talk with us on camera about Robinhood Lake.  But road manager George Bobo did tell us negotiations are underway to try to solve the problem.
