Club vows to clean up south Jackson

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There is a movement underway to clean up south Jackson and take back the blighted neighborhoods in that part of the city. It's called the Jackson Appreciation Club and it was started by this couple, Nadia and Kehinde Gaynor. Both are residents and Nadia tells 3 On Your Side what prompted the effort.

Nadia Gaynor said, "One day I was driving down the street and I just started looking at all the trash on our streets and I started looking at all of the abandoned homes and it just really made me upset."

Upset enough for her and Kehinde to call on their friends, businesses and others to help launch a hands on clean up campaign, recognizing that the city can't do it all. Each month, problem streets are targeted and swept by the Jackson appreciation club.

One house on Shady Lane will be a primary target for this month's effort and WLBT will have more on it in Monday's Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report.

If you want to volunteer, meet the Gaynors at the corner of Shady Lane and Raymond Road at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and help them take back their neighborhood.
