Agriculture commissioner candidates want your vote

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Candidates running for the Office of Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce were two of the many candidates at Wednesday's Hobnob Mississippi event.

Democratic candidate Joel Gill and his Republican opponent Cindy Hyde-Smith each addressed the crowd for about ten minutes each.

Gill has served as the mayor of Pickens since 2009 and worked in the agriculture business for 42 years.

Hyde-Smith is a state senator from Brookhaven.

She's served as the Chairman of Agriculture in the state senate for eight of her twelve years in office.

"I just think it's a very good thing especially to be a woman in politics now," Hyde-Smith said. "You know people can get behind her and say even though she's running for Ag Commissioner which is traditionally been a male role they just have to look at the qualifications."

"I hope folks get out it's going to be a great day Tuesday to turn out," Gill said. "It's supposed to be pretty warm so get all your friends and neighbors and church family and bring them to the polls because this is a very very important election."

Part of the role of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce is to regulate commodities.

For example, when it comes to gasoline, the commissioner makes sure you get the gallon you pay for.
