LINCOLN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An on-going dispute between a Lincoln County man and his ex-wife has landed both in the hospital with gunshot wounds.

About 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning, Lincoln County sheriff's deputies were called to a house in the 700 block of Case Trail Road, nearly three miles northwest of the city of Brookhaven.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing says after making several threats the ex-husband took action. She was shot in the upper left shoulder and he was wounded in the abdomen. Both were transported to the University Medical Center.

They have undergone surgery and are in stable condition.

Sheriff rushing says Charles Metterville will be charged with aggravated assault under the domestic violence laws, which carries an enhanced penalty. Rushing says additional charges are possible pending the outcome of their investigation.

The sheriff confirms Charles Metterville was shot in the stomach a couple of months ago with a handgun. Metterville claimed he accidentally shot himself. The sheriff would not confirm nor deny that the wound was intentionally self-inflicted. The investigation is continuing.

Officials say a shotgun was recovered at the house this morning.
