School bus crashed into tree, injured driver

UTICA, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Hinds County school bus, carrying students to a special program, crashed into a tree injuring the driver.

Utica Police Chief Timothy Myles said the unidentified female driver was transporting eight students shortly around 7:55 Saturday morning.

The bus was traveling northbound on Highway 27 South.

The students were headed to a program at the Utica branch of Hinds Community College.

Myles said the driver suffered a broken ankle but no severe injuries.

She was transported to U.M.C.

According to the chief, the students suffered bumps and bruises and were checked out at C.M.M.C.

He said the impact with the tree was so intense that the engine was about four feet from its mounted position after the crash.

Investigators are trying to determine if a medical emergency occurred.
