Mistletoe Marketplace goes green in its 31st year

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A charity shopping event mixed with glitz, glamour and specialty gifts from around the country wrapped up Saturday afternoon in the capital city.

The Junior League of Jackson's 31st Annual Mistletoe Marketplace closed up shop at the Mississippi Trade Mart.

The three day high end shopping event was crowded with people combing the aisles even in the final minutes of the holiday shopping experience.

This year the Junior League looked ahead to the next three decades of Mistletoe and worked to leave a smaller carbon footprint.

Beautifully decorated Christmas trees throughout the facility were donated to the Salvation Army, while decorations were re-purposed from previous years and online activities, like a silent auction, cut down on paper usage.

"We decided to what we call Grow Green, taking baby steps to be more eco-friendly. We did things like use re-useable shopping bags this year. We have done so many online promotions that haven't been done before," said Mistletoe Chairperson Lucy Gault.

Money raised during Mistletoe Marketplace goes back into the community to fund more than 30 metro area projects.

Organizers estimate that about 30,000 shoppers attended this year's event.
