Mourners filled First Baptist Church of Richland where family, friends, and even strangers came to honor the life of Allen Lutrick.
Last Tuesday morning the Richland Upper Elementary School student was looking forward to another day of learning. Then, the 10-year-old boy was struck by a car while trying to board an awaiting Richland school bus.
Sunday, his funeral services were held and he was remembered by residents who were taken aback by the tragedy.
Donna Newell and her son Addison couldn't attend the services but parked across the street from the church to pay their respects.
"Life is so short and so precious and we wanted to be a part," said Newell.
Addison, a sixth grader, attends Richland Upper Elementary. His mother said Allen's classmates and other students were pained by his death. But young Addison says they are trying to cope.
Newell added, talking about her son, "he said we just need to pray mama because it's bad for all around. For the man who hit him and for Allen and his family, for the loss that they incurred. So he actually taught me a few things."
Motorcycle riders joined the escort to honor the life of the young hit and run victim.
Newell believes the community has been affected by Allen's tragic death and the fate of the elderly driver who now faces manslaughter charges.
"Richland is just such a close knit community and when this happened it touched all of us in a way," said Newell.
After the services, Allen's flower draped coffin was loaded into a hearse and followed by a large procession.
Allen Lutrick was buried at Richland City Cemetery.
