BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Representative Philip Gunn of Clinton is the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.

Gunn, who was elected to the house in 2004, was just elected to his second full term.

Gunn represents House District 56, which is comprised of parts of Hinds, Madison, Warren and Yazoo counties.

The nomination happened during a closed door meeting of the Republican Caucus Monday afternoon at City Hall in Brandon.

Gunn says last week's election was not only a wake up call to elected leaders but also a call to action.

"We view this as a mantle of responsibility that we're going to carry forward. We've heard what the people had to say and we are going to make sure that their issues are brought to the forefront, conservative ideals are going to be pushed forward." said Gunn after being nominated. "We pledge ourselves to be responsible with the charge given to us and the people standing behind me are the ones that have made that happen."

The election of a new speaker will take place on the first day of the 2012 legislative session.
