RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It is one of the signals that the holiday season is here.

The Red Kettles of the Salvation Army.

Monday night at Northpark Mall students from Brandon, Pearl, Jackson Prep and Jackson Public Schools helped to kick off the annual campaign.

Through the money raised last year the Salvation Army was able to provide food for over 40,000 people, help with medical issues, rent, utilities, provide GED classes as well as provide assistance for the disabled, elderly and victims of disaster.

Captain Ken Chapman says this year the Salvation Army is teaming up with WLBT for a special Christmas prize.

"WLBT is bringing this contest with the Salvation Army, somebody in this town, Santa Claus will deliver a red Jeep Wrangler on Christmas Eve," Capt. Chapman said. "Go to wlbt.com and get all the details on the virtual kettle we can all ring together. If you can't give money, you can give your time, the people that you associate with can come around. This can be the year."

Captain Chapman says the demand for help is up 42 percent this year.

The goal of the Red Kettle Campaign is $425,000.
