Deliberate hit and run

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There are new developments surrounding a wild hit and run accident in downtown Jackson Wednesday afternoon.

Jackson police tell WLBT the hit and run driver, Maurice Mathis, chased down his girlfriend and then deliberately rear ended her vehicle at a high rate of speed.

Mathis did some serious damage to his girlfriend's car during the chase. The impact was so severe it sent the driver and passenger to the hospital for observation. Their injuries were not serious according to a police spokeswoman.

Mathis didn't get very far after he rear ended the vehicle. An eyewitness told WLBT he helped police capture the driver. "He hit that vehicle. And I was in front of him. He hit that vehicle and he drove past me going that way and he cut across the railroad tracks. You chased him down to Rio? Chased him down to Rio; waited for the police to get there. They apprehended him. He admitted to it."

After the collision, Mathis took off and went back to the Chimneyville Apartments where the domestic argument began earlier that day. 22-year-old Maurice Mathis now faces charges of domestic disturbance as well as hit and run.
