Kacey McDonald is 24-years-old, has five children, eight months pregnant, and she's homeless.
"I stayed with my mom all my life, but now I guess she moved on. Now we just out on our own. I had called WLBT 3 On Your Side and told them my situation," she said.
On Wednesday, WLBT News Director Dennis Smith made some calls which landed McDonald and her children at Stewpot, then at a temporary women's shelter we've been asked not to identify. They will spend their first night at the shelter Thursday.
"Newborns can't be at a shelter like that. I need somewhere decent. I don't have anywhere to go," McDonald told us.
"I thank them for getting us out of the cold but I don't have nothing but the clothes on my back. I have nothing for my unborn child, not even a sock or pamper. I don't get SSI, I get food stamps."
McDonalds' mother has custody of her 1-year-old son. McDonald admits she smoked marijuana while pregnant with him.
We asked McDonald if she's currently using drugs. "No mam," she said.
We asked her why she doesn't work. "Because of the kids. If I could tell my whole life story I would," she said.
McDonald says she tried to file with the Department of Human Services to collect child support from the fathers of her children. "But nothing came through. All I can do is give DHS their fathers' names and hope for the best," she said.
After McDonald's mother moved out of her house on Mill Street, McDonald and her children stayed there without utilities until they couldn't anymore. She has no transportation to get her two older children to school.
