Hit and run suspect in boy's death has prior record

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Raymond Echols, 13, rode along Bailey Avenue on his beloved bicycle he was on his way home following an afternoon of basketball with his friends when he was run-down and killed.

"There has been an arrest made early this morning at police headquarters, where George Newell, Jr., he turned himself in here, a little after 11:30 a.m. this morning. He is charged with felon leaving the scene of an accident, " said JPD Officer Colendula Green.

Police will not discuss the conversation they had with Newell after his arrest and a possible reason for leaving the scene of the crime. Authorities say they are pleased with the arrest as a bit of closure for his family members police assure the family they will do their part preparing the case thoroughly for the grand jury.

Police say Newell has a history with JPD. 

"George Newell has a prior record with the police department. He has a DUI  offense with the police department and we are checking to see if he has any more charges with our department as well, Officer Green added.

Newell was taken from the Jackson Police Department to the Raymond Detention Center where he will remain until his initial court appearance, which will be either Monday or Tuesday depending on the court's workload.
