CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An estimated 600,000 people in Mississippi live in poverty.

Many of those Mississippians rely on your generosity to help provide basics like food.

On Tuesday in Canton, hundreds of Madison County residents not only received your donations, but they also took home all of the "must haves" for a complete Thanksgiving dinner.

By the end of Tuesday, Thanksgiving dinner staples will be in the hands of 750 families living in Madison County.

The organization "Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty", known as MAD-CAAP, distributed 750 turkeys and grocery boxes to low-income residents.

"Sometimes my food gets low and this really helps out," said Madison County resident Gertha Burke.

The need for food donations is great across the state of Mississippi.

So, as you can probably imagine the turkey giveaway isn't the only place serving those in need.

Matt Seage lives at the Gateway Rescue Mission in downtown Jackson.

Seage helps serve some of the 400 meals served at the mission daily.

The organization depends on community donations during the holiday season, more than any other time of year.

"It's a time of year that gives us an opportunity to bring in a lot of food that will not only last us through Thanksgiving, but through the end of the year and into next year," said Rex Baker, the Executive Director for the Gateway Rescue Mission.

Marilyn Blackledge works for the Mississippi Food Network.

The organization provides food to nearly 400 agencies, including the Gateway Rescue Mission.

The Mississippi Food Network already has enough donations for Thanksgiving.

But they still need donations to hand out Christmas groceries to those in need.

"We try to provide you know for every family, so it would be you know close to 100,000 boxes," Blackledge said.

Regardless of where you donate, those receiving the good say they appreciate your generosity.
