Gas prices drop for some holiday travelers

BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some motorists heading home after the Thanksgiving holiday found a pleasant surprise at the pumps.

In the Jackson metro area the cheapest gas prices were found in Byram.

Vehicles were lined up five deep at the pumps at the Blue Sky Service Station where a gallon of regular gas is going for $2.91.

Across the street at the Texaco station it's two cents higher.

Travelers flocked to the pumps to fill their tanks.

According to Triple A, the national average for a gallon is $3.30.

In Jackson a week ago a gallon of regular was $3.14.

A month ago it was $3.27.

The drop in prices is good news for those hitting the highways and interstates.

"We decide that we would just stop here because it was cheaper. At home it's $3.19. So this was the cheapest that we saw all the way coming from Arkansas," said LaJoy Daigle of Mt. Pleasant, Arkansas.

"I actually came from north Jackson. It was like $3.19 in that area and I happened to go just a little bit south of Byram and this is the cheapest one. I said let me get me some gas while I'm out," said Anthony Burney of Jackson.

In the Capital City gas was cheapest on Gallatin Street at the BP and Shell stations and the nearby Petro station where the cost was $2.99.
