City Council approves new "Occupy Jackson" permit

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson City Council held a vote Tuesday morning to extend "Occupy Jackson's" permit in Smith Park.

A new permit was approved by a 4 to 1 vote at Tuesday's council meeting.

The lone vote against the permit was from Councilman Quentin Whitwell who has previously spoken out against a round the clock Occupy permit extension.

Councilmen Kenneth Stokes and Chokwe Lumumba abstained from the vote.

This extension allows protesters to stay in Smith Park from 5:00 in the morning until 11:00 at night.

Protesters must move to the sidewalk unless it's raining.

"The Council spoke in terms of what they want done as it relates to this group occupying the park after hours," said Chief Rebecca Coleman, Jackson Police Dept. "As far as the police department is concerned, we will operate according to the terms of the ordinance."

The previous permit only allowed protesters to stay in Smith Park until dusk when the park closed.
