JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi's top college football player was announced Tuesday night at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Southern Miss Quarterback Austin Davis was selected as the C-Spire Wireless Conerly Trophy winner.

Davis became the fourth USM player to claim the award. He led the Golden Eagles to a 10 win season and a berth in the Conference USA Championship.

The USM QB has broken every single passing record at Southern Miss and says winning the award is a blessing.

"I think the state of Mississippi has had tremendous football talent for years and the past winners of this award have been great football players. So, just to be mentioned in the same category as those guys is a huge honor," said Davis.

Southern Miss Head Football Coach Larry Fedora said, "Why do we have to replace him? I'm gonna get a 6th, 7th, or 8th year from him! So, I don't know, that's the thing about college football players, they come and have to have somebody else step up on your football team it's gonna give some young man an opportunity to lead this team next year."

All of the colleges in the state had a representative.

The top five finalists were: Delta State Quarterback Micah Davis, Jackson State Quarterback Casey Therriault, Mississippi State University Defensive Back Johnthan Banks, Ole Miss Defensive Back Charles Sawyer, and Davis.
