Sound Off: Michael Rubenstein and organ donation

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

We were saddened at the passing of former WLBT Sports Director, Michael Rubenstein.

Rube; as he was affectionately called, was a real pioneer in local television sports coverage.

This past Sunday many gathered for a memorial to remember Rube and his accomplishments.

One of my fondest memories of Rube was him taking off the month of January to travel to a foreign country, he loved those adventures.

Rube left WLBT twenty years ago to try to launch a sportscast at 9:00pm, now that adventure failed.

But that failure resulted in Mississippi having a spectacular Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

That would have never happened without the complete dedication of Michael Rubenstein.

Rube suffered with numerous health problems and was forced to be on dialysis for almost two years.

Twelve years ago Rube received a kidney from an organ donor.

Although 60 was a young age to lose Rube, he certainly lived longer and was able to give back to his beloved Mississippi because someone he never knew was an organ donor.
