Highway 27 still closed from tanker accident

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An overturned tanker has closed down a portion of Highway 27 in Utica.

The tanker overturned on Highway 27 and forced MDOT officials to close both directions of the Highway between Utica and Interstate 55.

Crews were called to the scene around three Monday morning. MDEQ officials say the truck driver was headed north on Highway 27 when he lost control. The tanker which was carrying diesel fuel then flipped into a grassy portion of private property. An estimated 700 to 800 gallons of diesel fuel spilled out.

MQEQ emergency responder Brad Ratcliff says it's a miracle the truck driver survived.

Ratcliff says, "the trucks laying on its side and the cabs smashed flat and the little bitty hole the man crawled out of is amazing, the good Lord was watching over him."

MDEQ crews are on the scene of the accident cleaning up and testing contaminated soil. They hope to open the road back up by this evening. State transportation officials suggest taking Curtis Rd. to Highway 18 as a detour.
