Several horses found malnourished, dead on farm

YAZOO COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The Yazoo County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of several dead and malnourished horses near Bentonia.

Sixteen starving horses are not being cared for by their owner, and several others have already died in the pasture.

Residents in the area have been bringing the horses hay.  Cannon Williams who has watching the horses slow death says, "They have bones poking out, they have no muscle structure at all.  With it supposed to be raining today and the temperatures dropping these horses will not make it."

The county is working to seize the animals and give them to someone to nurse them back to health.   Investigators with the Yazoo County Sheriff's Department say a judge has yet to sign a seizure order for the animals because the county has no facility to care for them.

Dean Johnson of the Yazoo County Sheriff's Department says, "The gentleman who has the horses, he only comes to Yazoo county on weekends."

Williams who has been bringing small amounts of hay to the horses says she would be willing to care for them but that also would take a court order.  Many of the horses have ticks on them and are eating tree bark to survive.

Debra Boswell of the Mississippi Animal Rescue League says she has been in contact with the owner, and is working out a plan to place the animals with other people.  The owner told her, he was caring for the animals for someone else, and got 'overwhelmed'.   Thursday afternoon some of the horses were moved from the pasture, but it's unclear where they were taken.
