Family left duct taped after home invasion

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A single mother of three is thankful to be alive after a frightening home invasion left her and her family duct taped and held at gunpoint. The mom thinks the incident could have been prevented if managers of her North Jackson town-home complex had listened to her concerns.

At 3:00 A.M. on December 9th, Sheria Smith's bedroom turned from comfortable to absolutely terrifying. Smith says, "the guy turned and started rushing at me with a gun and that's when I realized we were being robbed."

Smith lives with her dad and three young children in a townhouse in the "Carrington Townhomes" complex. Once the two robbers saw she was awake, they bound Smith and her dad with duct tape. Unfortunately, Smith's children weren't spared to the frightening ordeal.

Smith says, "they went and they woke up my 11 year-old, snatched her out of bed by her hair, had a gun to her also duct taped her up. I have a four year-old they also took him out of the bed and duct taped him up."

The robbers got away with flat screens, cell phones, Christmas gifts, a wedding ring, and Smith's car. But, the mother of three says the break-in was simply the final straw of issues to unravel in her home.

Smith says she's complained to the management of her town home complex for several years now about various issues in her town home. One of the more serious concerns she's complained about is the lock on the back door, which is where the burglars broke in. Management has fixed the lock on the door since the home invasion; however, prior to the break-in it was nothing to have this knob fall off and screwed back on.

Smith says, "I've offered to show them pictures, no one has ever come over here other than the maintenance man to see what was going on."

Smith and her family are packing up and moving one week after the break-in. So far Jackson police don't have anyone in custody. WLBT contacted the "Carrington Townhomes" for a comment, but did not receive a response.
