JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A local rap star was in town Saturday afternoon spreading Christmas cheer.

David Banner was at the Boys and Girls Club on Raymond Road in south Jackson. He spent time meeting and greeting several young people and later handing out gifts of tennis shoes, clothing and other items.

Banner says he wants other Mississippi celebrities to come together in an effort to better our state.

"I'm going to start begging people to try to do for our people and it's time for us to take responsibility of ourselves. Be the men and women that we're supposed to be and provide for our families. And my dream is now, you know, hopefully since we have so many people from Mississippi who are rising to the top, we now start coming together," Banner said.

Banner says he recently met with NBA All-Star Mo Williams and plans to reach out to another local NBA player Monta Ellis and other celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Jerry Rice.

Banner says his long-range plan is to build a facility in the inner city to headquarter his concept, which will help financially challenged families. This is the sixth year Banner's "Heal The Hood" project provided the gifts for the children.
