Signs of Misdirection

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some out-of-town motorists may be a little confused as they travel around the Jackson interstate system.

Two signs put up by the state Department of Transportation give wrong directions. On Southbound I-220 near Metrocenter, one sign says Highway 49 goes to Vicksburg and another says Interstate 20 goes to Hattiesburg.

It may be comical to drivers who are familiar with the area, but those who aren't may get lost.

And MDOT officials say they are concerned. "Ninety-nine percent of the people that are using these signs are not familiar with the area. The folks who know to go west to Vicksburg are going to go west to Vicksburg. It's your motorists that are passing through and, yeah, it's a huge deal to us," said Wes Dean, state traffic engineer.

MDOT says they will correct the signs as quickly as possible but they don't know how long that will take.

Another sign on Southbound I-55 is not so confusing but does point out two lanes are exit only when actually only one lane is exit only to I-220.
