Shopping for Christmas dinner

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Many of you spent the day finishing up last minute gift shopping, while others rushed to the grocery stores before they closed.

The parking lot of the Kroger grocery store off of I-55 in Jackson was packed with cars on Christmas Eve morning.

If you drove about ten minutes away to the Save-a-Lot by the Jackson Medical Mall there was a smaller crowd, but folks were all thinking about the same thing...there last minute Christmas dinner items. "I had a few last minute things to get like I said cranberry sauce, some turnip greens, I gotta have turnip greens on Christmas, said shopper Herb Bigben."

Bigben's dinner will also include, "chicken and dressing, cranberry sauce, we're going to have a ham and a green bean casserole," said Bigben.

Shopper Adell Jones said she's cooking a hen and dressing, gravy and rice, black eyed peas and "I'm cooking collard greens and cornbread and I got peach pie."

For Thanksgiving dinner turkey is the most popular meat to eat, but for Christmas dinner, grocery store managers say hams sell more rapidly. Many of those hams were on sale at Save-A-Lot. "$1.59 a pound on the shank portion ham and $1.79 a pound on the butt portion ham," said Save-A-Lot meat manager, Mike Pilgrim.

As shoppers look forward to eating and sharing their holiday meals, many said their focus isn't on their Christmas dinner. "Now is the time to celebrate Jesus' birthday, that's what it's all about, the love of Jesus," said Bigben.
