Hazlehurst police are piecing together clues to a wild car chase Wednesday night. It began with a stolen car in that city and ended when the accused car thieves crashed the vehicle near Byram.

Two people are behind bars in Hazlehurst. Xavier Cooper of Clinton, 18,  is facing charges of auto burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle. He is being held in the Hazlehurst jail. Hazlehurst police have also charged Diquan Barnes of Jackson, 18, with the same charges after the wild chase from Hazlehurst north toward Jackson.

It all started after MHP received a call for assistance to find a vehicle stolen from a gas station in Hazlehurst Wednesday night. Police say the trio took the car after dumping a van stolen earlier Wednesday from the Clinton area. Hazlehurst police say both could face additional charges.

One person remains on the run according to the police Chief.

"From my understanding, it was very reckless, the individuals, high speed? Yes. Dangerous? Yes." Did you find any weapons or drugs in the vehicle? At this time I would not like to respond on that."

The stolen car was spotted by a trooper who attempted to pull the vehicle over. But the driver and two passengers fled. Cooper and Barnes bolted into a wooded area. Metro One helicopter patrol spotted them and they were quickly arrested.

If you have any information about the third person involved in this incident call 601-894-1181.
