Safe rides for New Year's revelers

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

SafeKids Mississippi and American Medical Response are teaming up again this year to provide safe rides for New Year's Eve party goers in the metro Jackson area. They say this service will help prevent DUI tragedies.

This is the third year AMR and SafeKids have run this project. Some years as many as 250 people have gotten free rides home after drinking too much. Thursday, Luann Moore talked about an accident that changed her life. She was hit by a drunk driver on Highway 27 heading from Monticello ten years ago. She was riding a motorcycle when she was hit by a drunk driver who was a repeat DUI offender. Moore lost her leg in the accident.

"On impact, I hit face first and my husband thought that from the sound and the crash that I was dead," she said. "The lights went out and there was nothing but by the grace of God I was not, he had other plans for me", said Moore.

Moore says she was in the hospital for a month. AMR will provide white passenger vans that will be staffed with EMT's as drivers.

You can call SafeKids Saturday night from 11 p-m through 3 a-m for a ride to your home or a hotel. The number is (601) 360-0531. You must give your name, location and the number of riders. You will not be taken to another party or bar.
