Horse Owner Charged With Animal Cruelty

YAZOO CITY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Mississippi man has been found guilty of animal cruelty, but won't face any jail time or charges.  Alvin Ross was found guilty of nine counts of cruelty to animals in Yazoo County Justice Court.  The Yazoo County Sheriff's department began their investigation into Ross, after 15 starving horses and a mule were seized from a property near Bentonia in December.

"Its a victory for the horses we did get out of there, they have moved on to more permanent locations and continue to receive the care they need," says Debbie Young who works with In Defense Of Animals.

WLBT News first broke the story, when neighbors discovered several 9 dead horses and others in various stages of decomposition.  15 remaining horses near starvation, and a mule have now been granted to In Defense of Animals, an international animal protection organization.

Today the horses are recovering.  Young says, "They're getting stronger and stronger, they're beginning to feel a little frisky, running in the pasture, that's a good sign."

The judge hearing the case offered to suspend the fines, if Ross would surrender all rights to the seized horses, which he did.
