Taking Back Our Neighborhoods - 24 added to clean up list

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The battle against eyesores in the capital city continues in our Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report.

The City of Jackson has added 24 more private properties to its clean up list.

And city officials promise there are more to come.

The new list includes 1941 Shady Lane Drive.

Folks who live near it won't be sad to see it go.

That's not the case for Jennifer Welch.

She's the property manager for Belhaven Residential, a business focused on buying, renovating and restoring old homes in the Belhaven neighborhood.

She says five have been rehabbed; so far, and her company had hoped to add 804 Jefferson Street to that list.

Instead, the City of Jackson has added it to their list of houses to be demolished.

"I'm a little bit sad, it's gonna be torn down because it used to have historical significance," Welch said. "This area of the neighborhood was called judges' row and a judge used to live here, so I'm sad that the historical part of it's going to be destroyed, but the owner has refused to sell it and we've inquired about buying it so, it will probably enhance the visual aspects of this street corner and the neighborhood, so I guess if it has to be demolished that it's a good thing."

Since the beginning of the fiscal year, the city has demolished 30 properties and resolved 152 grass and weeds cases.
