New report details how much money hospitals pull into their communities

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

State lawmakers are learning more about the economic impact hospitals have within their communities.

The Mississippi Hospital Association released a new report Tuesday morning. The report details the financial impact hospitals have in every legislative district in the state.

For instance, House District 26 in Clarksdale, includes "Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center."  According to the M.H.A. report, that hospital generates more than $103-million in that community. By comparison, the legislative district including Baptist Hospital in Jackson pours more than $2 billion into the community.

The hospital report was distributed during the MHA's "Health Advocacy Day," at the downtown Marriott.

"One of the reasons that we do it is because we have a whole new batch of legislators and a lot of them need to know how healthcare affects their district and these are numbers that they understand, economic impact," said Shawn Rossi, the Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations for the Mississippi Hospital Association.

Governor Phil Bryant is the guest speaker for "Health Advocacy Day."
