Vicksburg store clerk appears in court following shooting

A Vicksburg store clerk who shot one of his customers went before a judge Tuesday.

Jalal Hizam appeared in Vicksburg Municipal Court charged with aggravated assault after shooting Thomas Flaggs, 34, Monday night at the Five Star Food Mart on Bowmar Avenue.

Police say Hizam made derogatory statements to Flaggs about not having enough money to make a purchase.

After the two men got into a physical altercation, the clerk pulled a weapon.

Witnesses told police Hizam chased after Flaggs, screaming racial slurs, and shot him in the back of his right thigh.
