Alford Bridge in Pike County sees its share of traffic. But there are no lights to illuminate the bridge when night falls.
Some time before 7:15pm Tuesday, someone shot and killed 19-year-old Deairrika Conerly and left her body on the bridge.
"She was shot in the head and it appeared to be at close range," says Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman.
Detectives are looking for 25-year-old Damion V. Ferguson of Summit in the murder. He was last seen driving a white 2004 Hyundai Accent, license plate PKZ 506. Ferguson is also a suspect in an armed robbery and attempted armed robbery in a separate incident.
Some who live near the crime scene had not heard the news until our crew told them.
Authorities continue to investigate, but there is one witness who says he saw a car stop, and that's where that witness found the dead body.
"Someone had reported they saw a car leaving the scene. Older model car," Coroner Pittman says.
That witness is one of Jimmienell Haraughty's two nephews, who had passed by the scene.
"He was saying Louis had just found a dead body on the bridge. I freaked out. I hung up with him and got my son," Haraughty says. "My kids, they go swimming down there at the river off the bridge. It's weird, it's freaky."
For Haraughty and her friend Anna Burris, news of the murder in their quiet area is just sinking in.
"I actually read it on Facebook, my friend Jimmienell's son saying not to go to the bridge," Burris says.
Deairrika Conerly leaves behind two children, ages 7 and 6 months.
