Dangerous intersection in Copiah County

Posted: Updated:
COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There is already a flashing light at the intersection of Highway 27 and Lee Avenue in Crystal Springs, but residents complain it does little good because people are speeding up the hill on both sides of the intersection. Speeding drivers do not have time to stop if there is a car crossing, or pulling out into Highway 27 at a slow rate of speed.

Kim Hebert lost her brother at the intersection in 2009. "My brother was killed in an accident here and another resident got killed at the same time. Every time I turn around somebody else is getting hit here. Something needs to be done at this intersection. Nobody know it's a dangerous intersection, something needs to be done to keep people from getting hurt. There's gonna be more wrecks there's gonna be more lives taken," said Hebert.

Everett Thornton, an 88 year old World War II veteran, who has lived at that corner for 50 years, and has seen a lot of wrecks here, says he has a solution to the problem.

"They need to put a bump down here, coming up that hill and make them slow down, or else put a light down there, like they do in the city and make them slow down," said Thornton.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has conducted a traffic survey here, but residents say it was done in the middle of the day and not during afternoon rush hour where the problem is the worst.

A highway patrolman gave four speeding tickets while we were on the scene, doing the story. District Engineer Kevin Magee has promised to check into the situation at the intersection and get back with WLBT.
