JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Authorities are ramping up enforcement of a new Jackson ordinance prohibiting road-side sale of pets.
The misdemeanor violation carries a maximum fine of $100 for the first offense. Jackson Police recently began issuing citations and warnings in areas that have become known for pet sales.
City leaders are concerned they may be a front for puppy mills. The city animal shelter and non-profit animal humane organizations are exempt from the law.
It also has no impact on properly licensed pet stores.
