JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Teams from across the country are competing in sporting and other events at the Mississippi School for the Blind.
It is an opportunity for students with disabilities to show their athletic abilities.
The school is hosting the South Central Association for Blind, Cheerleading and Performing Arts Conference Championships.
Cheerleaders, wrestlers and mascots showed off their skills Saturday.
School for the Blind officials said their students must travel out of state to compete in wrestling, because no other schools in the state offer the sport.
"It's a sport that our students can participate with sighted students on an equal basis. So we like to encourage a lot of schools here in the state. Of course you know we're the only school in that state to have high school wrestling. So we try to encourage other schools to pick up the sport," said MSB Head Wrestling Coach Walter Harper.
"Our school is very well rounded. We have students that are very much interested in making sure they compete to the fullest not only in athletics but also academics. Mississippi is among the best of the best," MSB Superintendent Dr. Rosie Pridgen.
Schools from Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas participated in the championships.
