PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Highway 468 commuters will be greeted Monday with a new bridge that is twice as wide as the old bridge.
The new span replaces a bridge that was about 60-years old. It's between the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility and State Hospital at Whitfield in Pearl.
Construction of the $2 million bridge began in June of 2011. The old structure was 22-feet wide and the new bridge is 44-feet wide.
Transportation officials say increased volumes of traffic in the area required a larger structure.
