Legislators respond to Bryant's first State of State address

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Lawmakers vow to work with the state's 64th governor as Phil Bryant sets a course for his vision for Mississippi.

Some elected officials say his background has given them insight into his leadership.

Governor Bryant issued his first State of the State address on the outdoor platform where he would have given inaugural speech.

House and senate members had front row seats for his address on improving education and health while eliminating teen pregnancy and government service duplication.

House Speaker Republican Philip Gunn said Bryant has put forth ideas that conservatives have been pushing for years.

"Putting committees together I learned of the existence of a number of committees and commissions which caused me to raise questions about who they are and what they do... Are they still serving a purpose, and if not let's eliminate that waste," Gunn said.

"We're gonna do what we can do to help him...Teen pregnancy has been a big thing and a big menace to our society," said Sen. David Jordan, a Democrat from Leflore County. "I think if we can limit or eradicate it that will make the economy better."

Many lawmakers feel Bryant's previous government positions will help in working with both bodies to attract businesses to the state.

"It speaks volumes for his experience in the state," said Democratic Rep. George Flaggs Jr., of Vicksburg. "You can tell he was lieutenant governor and now that he's governor he's sharing the same vision with us, and I'm willing to work with him to move the state forward."

"He had some substantial things to say. He talked about the budget, Smart Budget Acts and some things some solid recommendations that I'm sure the legislature will consider," said Republican House Speaker Pro Tempore Greg Snowden of Meridian.

Republican leadership in both the house and senate could help the new governor easily approve the plans in his agenda.
