Affleck pleads not guilty

Posted: Updated:

An ex-convict accused of kidnapping and killing his ex-girlfriend appeared in Hinds County court for his arraignment Thursday morning. George Affleck pleaded not guilty to capital murder and felon-in-possession of a firearm.

Affleck allegedly kidnapped and murdered Dianne Hearn, 61, last May. He's accused of then dumping her body alongside Interstate 20 near Vicksburg.

Attorney John Colette is representing Affleck. He says Affleck is concerned about the sentences he faces. Prosecutors plan to seek to the death penalty.

"George is concerned about the case ... because it's capital murder, concerned about the death penalty aspect of it," Colette said. "At this point it's all preliminary."

Affleck remains in jail without bond. He's scheduled to appear in court again on March 1 for a status hearing.
